Tsunami HAVOC RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME FROM DEVELOPMENT PROMOTION GROUP

Dear friends,

The Damage - The onslaughts of the killer waves have very badly affected the poor who are living very near the costal areas in Tamil Nadu.  In total, more than 8300 lives have been lost. More than one lakh people have been displaced.  Livelihood assets worth millions and millions of rupees have been destroyed.  The mind can no longer comprehend the enormity of the numbers or the horror they represent.  Fate has indeed scripted a most tremendous tragedy.  But, life must prevail.  Tragedies must be overcome.  Along India’s devasted coastline, thousands of helpless families cry out for help.

Response - To mitigate the sufferings of the most affected people, Development Promotion Group (DPG), a Non- Governmental Organization (www.dpgsulo.com), which has a working experience of  more than 18 years, has decided to rehabilitate 1,000 families in two locations – 4/5 villages in Kelayur block of Nagapattinam district – the worst affected district, and Colachel, a coastal town in KanyaKumari, which is the third most badly affected area.

The Area - The Government and other local civil society organizations including DPG representatives / partner NGOs have already taken up the relief work in a small way in Colachel and 4 villages in Nagapattinam (Kelayur Block). With regard to immediate relief, there is no problem.  But it is very difficult for DPG / partners or civil society groups to take up any massive scale rehabilitation programme without your support. Hence we place before you this appeal. We are already in touch with the local administration to start our resettlement plan.

Contribution - We appeal to you to liberally contribute towards this cause into our account to initiate the process.  Complete rehabilitation of one family with housing and livelihood support would cost around 3000 dollars (Rs. 1,35,000/-) including co-ordination cost of 15%.  It may go up or come down.  Again, depending upon the receipt of funds, we may increase / reduce the target coverage of families or even abandon the idea if the response is not to a minimum level.  We request our friends / partners to  liberally contribute to this human cause.
