COMMUNITY – BASED HEALTH INITIATIVES

Christine Matthews Health & Development Society is located in Seduvalai providing primary health care in and around Seduvalai area and also from other three outreach clinics situated at Minnal Nagar, Vallandaraman and Kattukollai. Community health clinics as early as possible for any kind of health problems. Qualified medical staff at their respective clinics render medical services to people suffering from all kinds of diseases and complicated cases are referred to the major hospital. Laboratory facilities are available to carry out basic lab tests. VCTC for HIV / AIDS is attached and HIV testing kits are being supplied from CMC, Vellore.

The total number of patients who were treated from all the four clinics during this period Apr. ’06 – Mar. ’07 is 38,517 which includes the lab cases. Since there was chickungunya fever break-out in the last year, 172 patients were treated in our clinics. CMS CHAD wanted us to help them in HIB PROBE programme for the prevention of haemophilus influenza meningitis in children below two years of age. 71 women were subjected to speculum examination and were treated for various sexually transmitted infections.

40 successful deliveries were conducted in the last year. 76 cases of road traffic accidents were given first aid and complicated cases were referred to major hospitals. Vellore is known for its scorching and soaring heat which makes people suffer from heat boils. There for 81 cases of summer boil cases underwent treatment in our clinics. Care and treatment is provided for diabetics, hypertensive cases and other communicable disease like typhoid, jaundice, gastroenteritis, malaria, upper and lower respiratory infections etc. Tuberculosis cases are identified and referred to DOTS CMC or GH Vellore. Future plans include expansion of the work to interior remote villages for which we lack funds.

Conclusion : There is a move to establish a society and delink this initiative from DPG’s direct project category. This will ultimately happen in 2007 – 08 and within the next year, the project will completely become independent of DPG!
